The Scuola Politecnica di Design was the first visual and industrial design school set up in Italy. It was founded in 1954 by Nino Di Salvatore and has trained thousands of designers and visual communication professionals from a good forty different countries.

The teaching is based on the principles of Gestaltpsycologie. Therefore the SPD may be considered a successor of Gropius´ Bauhaus tradition, and one of the most important gestaltic schools, where the awareness of certain universal design values is taught.

The SPD is famous throughout the world for its well-established exclusive teaching method, and its teachers have included: Gio Ponti, Rodolfo Bonetto, Achille Castiglioni, Isao Hosoe, Pino Tovaglia, Max Huber, Cesare Musatti, Walter Ballmer, Gaetano Kanisza, Gillo Dorfles and Bruno Munari.

Munari accompanied the students for more than ten years and is remembered for his exceptional versatility and teaching capacity. An extraordinary teaching staff together with excellent students have led to the school being awarded prestigious prizes: the Gold Medal Certificate at the Milan Triennial Exhibition, the Municipal Certificate of Merit from the Milan Commune and the Golden Compasses Award received from the ADI (Industrial Design Association) in 1994.

The Scuola Politecnica di Design is the standard-bearer of Italian design culture in the world. The school's participation in the Montreal World Exhibition, the Venice Biennial Exhibition, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Milan Science and Technology Museum bear witness to this.
