State Academy of Art and Design - Stuttgart
Address: Am Weissenhof, 1
City: D-70191 Stuttgart
Country: Germany
The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart), attended by approximately 800 students, is an institution at which the Fine Arts and Applied Arts are taught along side each other and in combination. This approach is born of tradition and reflects the Academy's own understanding of its role in education. It is a quality which it wishes to maintain and cultivate.
Members of the teaching staff of the Stuttgart Academy have included such well-known personalities in the world of art as Adolf Hoelzel and his followers Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer.
The type of education provided at the Stuttgart State Academy differs from that at institutions specialising in the humanities or natural sciences. It is characterised by far more direct interaction with the teaching staff. The out-standing quality and range of equipment available at the workshops allows students, under the guidance of workshop masters, to acquire a variety of practical skills. Transdisciplinarity is no exception, but an intentional feature. As with all courses in creative subjects, students need to be bold, to be self-starters and to show a high degree of initiative.
The State Academy offers 15 courses. Their traditional heart are the fine arts, represented by the fine art foundation course and the fine art classes, including painting, graphics and sculpture. These train art teachers and artists and exert considerable influence on the applied art departments. The fine arts de-partments are pluralistic in nature and do not subscribe to a homogeneous form of art or of art-teaching. They want to offer a broad spectrum of different artistic approaches. In the applied arts, architecture and design courses, the original focus on manual trades has been abandoned to take account of the demands of industrial production. A broad spectrum of highly practical courses is now offered for all key professional fields, including architecture, where interior space design and furniture design included.
In addition, there are three courses for restorers, concerned with the physical conservation of works of art and craft. Lectures in history of art, history of architecture and history of design provide cultural background, open to everybody.
State Diplomas (Degrees) can be obtained for Art Education, Architecture, Industrial Design, Textile Design, Graphic Design, Restoration of Paintings and of Polychrome Wooden Sculptures, Restoration of Archeological, Ethnological and Craft Objects, Restoration and Conservation of Graphic, Archival and Library Materials.
The State Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart is the largest institution of its kind in the State of Baden-Württemberg and a prominent one in the Federal Republic of Germany. It accommodates fine and applied arts under a common roof, which it considers a special quality. It prides itself on the ability to provide personal tuition, teaching in small units and supported by well equipped and excellent workshops.
